Summary

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) seeks an innovative and data-informed Marketing Content Strategist to lead the strategic planning, development and optimization of engaging content across the Museum’s owned and earned digital channels. This position plays a critical role in shaping how the Museum connects with its audiences through storytelling, campaign integration, and digital engagement.

The Marketing Content Strategist sets and drives the comprehensive audience-focused content strategy for owned and earned media platforms, including social media, web, email, and digital signage. With a keen understanding of audience behavior, platform trends, and institutional goals, this position crafts and guides a cohesive digital presence that builds awareness, drives engagement, and advances the Museum’s mission. This position supervises the Marketing & Communications Designer and a temporary Marketing Automation Specialist, ensuring that all digital and visual content supports brand identity, accessibility standards, and content performance objectives. The Strategist also collaborates extensively with departments and across the Museum to ensure strategic alignment and consistency in messaging and design.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership and Planning

Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing content strategy that supports institutional priorities and audience development goals.Use analytics to refine strategies, optimize engagement, and inform content planning.

Content Development and Channel Management

Lead content planning, messaging, and editorial strategy across owned digital platforms (social media, website, email, digital signage, multimedia).Oversee marketing publication calendar including Art Matters and Annual Report.Create and manage a comprehensive content calendar that reflects and supports Museum-wide campaigns, exhibitions, and programs.Ensure all marketing content is brand-aligned, inclusive, accessible, and audience-centered.

Team Supervision and Creative Direction

In collaboration with the Director of Marketing, Communications & Brand Strategy, develop campaign concepts to guide production work across marketing channels.Supervise the Marketing & Communications Designer and temporary Marketing Automation Specialist, providing creative direction, project prioritization, and developmental feedback.Ensure content supports strategic messaging goals and aligns with brand standards.Coordinate design and content timelines to meet internal deadlines and marketing campaign needs.

Collaboration and Cross-Departmental Integration

Serve as a liaison to internal teams (Curatorial, Education, Development, Visitor Services) to align digital content with institutional messaging and initiatives.Facilitate cross-functional collaboration to gather insights and develop unified storytelling approaches.Provide support and guidance to internal partners on best practices in digital communication and engagement.

Evaluation and Optimization

Track and report on key performance indicators for content across platforms.Use audience data and platform insights to recommend changes that improve reach, engagement, and effectiveness.

Other Responsibilities

Manage freelance partnerships with photographers, videographers, graphic designers, vendor relationships and third-party tools related to digital content and platforms.Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, digital media, communications, journalism, or a related field.5+ years of experience in digital marketing, digital content creation, editorial strategy, or social media management, preferably in a cultural or nonprofit setting.1 year’s experience supervising other creative individual contributors.Proven ability to write and edit for a range of platforms and audiences.Strong knowledge of social media platforms, CMS tools (e.g., WordPress), email marketing software, and analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Meta Insights).Familiarity with design software and visual literacy with image/video editing tools a plus (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).Deep appreciation for the arts and a commitment to equity and inclusion in communications.

Specialized Knowledge, Competencies, And Abilities

Strategic thinker with a data-driven approach to content creation and optimization.Strong editorial judgment and the ability to write, edit, and adapt messaging across channels and audiences.Experience managing and mentoring staff or creative contributors.Skilled in balancing multiple projects and deadlines in a collaborative environment.Comfortable leading cross-functional planning and facilitating team collaboration.Knowledge of or passion for the arts, museums, and community engagement a plus.Experience with social media marketing strategies, concepts, and practices.Remains knowledgeable and up to date in different social trends, pop culture, and best practices.Ability to plan, prioritize and take on responsibility and decision-making in order to achieve established goals.Acts as a team player with strong communication skills. Enjoys connection and collaboration across departments and disciplines.Organized and can manage multiple simultaneous projects using a project management system (such as Wrike).

Physical Requirements And Work Environment

Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer and printer noise. Position requires the ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, printer and phone system; May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds; Support given to various departments across campus may result in occasional exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions. May need to work evenings and weekends for Museum functions.
