Role Summary
The Research & Grants Intern supports PBB’s fundraising and program sustainability by researching prospective funders and helping prepare compelling, well organized grant materials. You’ll learn the full grants lifecycle, from prospecting and pipeline management to drafting LOIs/proposals, assembling attachments, and supporting reports, while collaborating closely with leadership and program staff. This role is ideal for a strong writer who enjoys research, organization, and mission driven storytelling.
Key Responsibilities
• Prospect Research: Identify and profile foundations, corporate giving programs, and public micro grants aligned with PBB’s mission, youth development, workforce readiness, and LA Area impact; summarize eligibility, strategic fit, and potential award ranges.
• Grant Pipeline & Calendar: Build and maintain a tracker with deadlines, requirements, contacts, and submission status; schedule reminders and prep timelines.
• Writing & Editing: Draft and refine LOIs, proposal narrative sections, application responses, and stewardship messages using PBB boilerplate; ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with funder priorities.
• Supporting Documents: Coordinate collection and organization of attachments (e.g., budgets, program descriptions, IRS letter, board/staff lists, DEI statements, MOUs); maintain version control and file hygiene.
• Data & Impact Support: Partner with programs to quantify outcomes (e.g., participants served, hours delivered, demographic reach) and capture qualitative stories for proposals and reports.
• Landscape Memos: Prepare brief research summaries on funding trends, corporate CSR priorities, and peer organizations; highlight opportunities, risks, and recommended next steps.
• Reporting & Stewardship: Assist with interim/final report drafting, light donor/partner database hygiene, and thank you/acknowledgment materials.
• Special Projects: Help develop boilerplate language, a style guide for grants, one pagers, and simple visuals for proposals or reports.
Ideal Qualifications
• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills; clear, concise, audience appropriate tone.
• Strong research and synthesis abilities; comfortable navigating open web sources and funder sites.
• Highly organized and deadline driven; able to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail.
• Cultural humility and a demonstrated commitment to equity and youth development; ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Nice to Have: Familiarity with grant platforms (e.g., Skip, Candid/Foundation Directory Online, GuideStar, grants.gov), Canva or simple data visualization.
Time Commitment & Supervision
• Hours: 20 hours/week; some tasks may require availability during Pacific Time business hours.
• Meetings: Weekly 15-30 minute check in with supervisor; additional touchpoints around key deadlines.
What You’ll Gain
• Hands on experience with the grant lifecycle and nonprofit development operations.
• A portfolio of work products (e.g., LOIs, proposal sections, research briefs, grant tracker).
• Mentorship, resume building projects, and professional references upon strong performance.
• Exposure to multi industry partners, guest speakers, and community stakeholders.
Academic Credit & Compensation
Academic credit may be arranged with your institution. The internship is structured to prioritize your learning, consistent with the U.S. Department of Labor’s primary beneficiary framework for internships.
Location & Technology
Remote; reliable internet and a computer capable of video conferencing are required.
Safeguarding & Background Check
Because PBB serves youth, interns may be asked to complete a background check prior to certain program activities. PBB maintains a youth‑safe, harassment‑free environment for all staff, interns, volunteers, and participants.
Equal Opportunity Statement
